1. Is it necessary for me sign up with URLCutter to generate
short urls?
You don't have to
sign up with URLCutter to create
shorter urls for long URLs. You are free to create any number of short urls
pointing to long URLs as you wish without signing up with URLCutter.
2. Why am I getting the message, please enter a valid
url?
There could be two reasons if you are getting this message
- The url you have entered in step 1 is invalid. To check that it is really
valid url, try to navigate to the site by pasting the url into browser's
addressbar. If browser navigates to target site, there might be a bug in our
url validation procedure. In such case, feel free to
send bug report along with the url you tried to shorten.
- There might be some extra white space or new line characters in the textbox.
Please remove them and try to shorten url again.
3. What characters can I use in a short url of my
choice?
If you decide to create a custom shortcut to long url, it should contain
atleast one alphabetic character with a combination of numerals and alphabets
or any one of numerals and alphabets.
4. Is it necessary to enter a short url of my choice to
create new short url?
It is not necessary for you to enter a short url of your choice, until you
decide to create a custom short url. You can create as many random numeric urls
as you like from the URLCutter home page using "Create random URL" button
without entering short url as part of step 2.
5. How can I create a custom alias for a long
URL?
You can
cut a long url
to custom short url from the home page of URLCutter. Enter your long url
in the textbox below the "Paste long url below" text, enter your short url you
wish to create in the smaller textbox and click on "Create custom url" button.
That's it the long url will be shortened to short url of your choice if there
is no short url already taken by that name. The custom url alias should contain
only aplhabetic, numeric or combination of alphabetic and numeric characters.
6. Can I create a custom alias for a URL
without signing up with URLCutter?
You can create custom short urls from the home page of URLCutter and it doesnot
require you to signup with URLCutter. You can opt to sign up with URLCutter and
get benefits like maintaining your short urls, editing short urls and if you
don't need them then you can delete them or even send them to your friends
later.
7. When I try to create a shorter url for site hosted
on localhost, the message says "Please enter a valid URL"?
Currently, it is not possible to create aliases for sites hosted on localhost
or even for localhost. A valid long url that you want to trim should be
something like
http://domain.tempurl/default.asp?p1=value1&p2=value2
8. How long does my short url remain valid?
All the short urls (custom and random short urls) remain valid until it is
removed from our database or it is classified as spam or abuse, which means
that all the short urls created by you with us remain valid until we remain
functional.
9. How can I view statistics for url alias I had
created?
Click on "View statistics" links under
Home link on top most
navigation menu to
manage
your short urls to view statistics for a short url of your choice. On the
page that follows, enter the short url in the textbox and click on "View
statistics" button to get statistics for the given short url.
10. What does the statistics of short url display?
The statistics of a short url displays the following information:
- Short url
- The target url
- Date on which the url was created
- Total hits the url has received since its creation time
- Last hit date, the date on which the url received hit last time
- Last hits, the number of hits the url received on the day represented by last
hit date.
11. Can I change the shortcut I created before to
redirect me to another site?
To avail the facility to edit and even
manage short url aliases created, you have to sign up with URLCutter. The
registration is completely free, and you get facilities of editing, managing
and viewing statistics for the short url(s) you have created.
12. Are the short urls case sensitive?
No. All the custom short urls are case insensitive. If you have create a custom
shortcut, you can use in all capitals or in small case or a mix of both if you
want. However, if there is a case that the url is not redirecting you to the
target site as expected by you, feel free to
contact us along with the details of the short url.
13. What is a random url?
A random short URL is created when you paste long url in step 1 and click on
"Create Random URL" button. A random url consists of sequence of numeric
characters and will look like

1. How do I install "Cut URL" button?
To get detailed instruction on installing the "Cut URL" button, visit the
installation instructions page.
2. When clicking on "Cut URL" nothing comes up?
Try installing the latest version of the "Cut URL" button from the
URLCutter tools page. If you have any popup blocker installed, then press
Ctrl key while clicking on the "Cut URL" button to allow the popup. If this
does not solve your problem, you can send us a report discussing your problem.
3. I cannot login to my account
To use your registered URLCutter account you need to have cookies enabled in
your browser. If you do have them enabled, then your browser should be set to
accept cookies from the domain urlcutter.com. If this is the case, you should
try adding URLCutter to your trusted sites list and try login again.
4. How do I add "Cut URL" button to my browser, if it is not
detected by URLCutter?
We cannot give a detailed step by step instructions for all the browsers
available in the market today, however we have given instruction for the
popular browsers used by the users. If you have a browser that is not
identified by URLCutter, try installing the button as mentioned in the "Other"
browsers section. If you are successful in installing setting up and using the
"Cut URL" button, you are free to send us the steps you followed to install the
button and we would be kind enough to include it in URLCutter tools browser
section.
5. Should I provide my login password at the time of signing
up with URLCutter?
It is mandatory to provide a password at the time of signing up with URLCutter.
6. Should this password be same as the one I use at time of
logging into my email account?
It doesn't have to be the same password you use for signing into your email
account. For security reasons we recommend you to choose a password that is
different from the one you use for signing in with your email provider.
